All We Need to Know About Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is increasingly spreading in Indian women these days. It is quite saddening to know that India is ranked 3rd in the world in cancer cases in females. Among those cases, breast cancer is the most commonly detected cancer in females. In India, every 28th female is detected with breast cancer. Daily around 2000 females are detected with breast cancer in the country and 1200 from the same are detected at an advanced stage due to lack of awareness. Dr. Renu J Gandhi -  Sonography and Mammography Expert at Vama Wellness Center for Women talks about all the details you need to know about breast cancer.

The first symptoms of breast cancer usually appear as an area of thickened tissue in the breast or a lump in the breast or an armpit.

Other symptoms include:

  • pain in the armpits or breast that does not change with the monthly cycle
  • pitting or redness of the skin of the breast, similar to the surface of an orange
  • a rash around or on one of the nipples
  • discharge from a nipple, possibly containing blood
  • a sunken or inverted nipple
  • a change in the size or shape of the breast
  • peeling, flaking, or scaling of the skin on the breast or nipple

Most breast lumps are not cancerous. However, women should visit a doctor for an examination if they notice a lump on the breast. Our experienced breast surgery specialist has expertise in many surgeries done for breast cancer. These may require removal of the whole or part of the affected breast in breast cancer.

Self-Examination and its Importance:

Self-examination is the most important step any woman can take to reduce the chances of breast cancer. This is a regular and systematic palpation of the breast by a woman herself to assess for any abnormality. It should be done during her period’s week for every woman of 20 years and above.

A mammogram is commonly used to detect early signs of breast cancer. It uses a low-energy X-ray to take images of the human breast Along with mammography, sonography is also done. Every woman aging 40 and above should undergo mammography at least once a year. The ideal time to go through a mammogram is the week after your period ends. Vama Wellness Center is one of the Top Mammography Centers in Surat.

“Many times we are only alert when we see a case of breast cancer in our families. We become cautious about our and our family members’ health for some time and then again go careless about it. One should be active in self-assessment of breast cancer and should immediately consult a doctor if anything suspicious is found for early detection. Only our awareness can prevent us and our dear ones from this disease.
